Overview

A three-quarter view of a figure, revealing the brain, skull, cervical spine, rib cage, and heart with flowers in a cosmic silhouette. This piece was in response to a call for submissions on the topic of, “Being Human.” This topic threw me for a loop at first, as it’s just so broad, how could I possibly depict it in one image? The answer is, I cannot. There is no way to cover the vast expanse of variety that is the human experience in one image. So, this is what being human means to me: on a basic level, being human is being a member of the species Homo sapiens, complete with the associated anatomical structures, like a central nervous system, endoskeleton, heart, and most important to the, “sapiens,” or, “wise,” part of, “Homo sapiens,” a brain. Expanding on that, into personal belief, being human means existing in the space of conscious thought and self-awareness, it means recognizing what is you, and what is not, while still acknowledging both as part of a greater whole. It means having an impact upon the environment, and the environment having an impact on you. Being human means existing as a piece in a large interconnected puzzle of life, and learning to appreciate as many perspectives as possible, while still holding space and compassion for your own as well. Being human is looking at a flower, and appreciating all the ways in which you are similar to it, knowing all the ways you are different, and then choosing whether to water it or pluck it. Being human is having the will to choose how you want to interact with the world, and the forethought to see how your choices make an impact.
